Starry night painting — Cambridge, MA

Exterior painting for a Cambridge home begins with a thorough inspection of the existing surfaces to identify any issues like rot, mildew, or peeling paint. Step one involves meticulous cleaning, often through pressure washing, to remove dirt, grime, and chalking. Following this, loose paint is carefully scraped away, and any rough areas are sanded to create a smooth substrate. Any necessary repairs to wood or caulking are then addressed, after which a high-quality primer is applied to bare or problematic areas to ensure optimal adhesion and a durable finish.

For historic homes in Cambridge, the best approach to exterior painting involves meticulous attention to detail and often the use of historically appropriate materials and techniques. Professionals will prioritize proper surface preparation, including careful scraping and sanding to preserve original surfaces, and may recommend specific primers and paints that are compatible with older building materials. The goal is to achieve a durable, aesthetically pleasing finish that respects the home's historic character while providing modern protection against the elements. Consulting with preservation guidelines is often part of the process.

The cost of exterior painting in Cambridge is significantly influenced by the total square footage of the home and the complexity of its architecture. Homes with multiple stories, intricate trim, steep roof pitches, or extensive surface preparation needs (like significant scraping or repairs to damaged siding) will naturally incur higher costs due to increased labor and time. The quality of paint and primer selected also plays a role, with premium products offering greater durability but a higher initial price point.
